MORAVIAN DAILY TEXT
Second Sunday after Christmas
Watchword for the week – Praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven. Psalm 148:13
Sunday, January 4 – Jeremiah 31:7-14; Psalm 147:12-20; Ephesians 1:3-14, John 1:(1-9), 10-18
I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry. Psalm 40:1
The sick man answered [Jesus], “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” John 5:7-8 NKJV
Creator of all, on this first Sunday of a new year, may we remember that no human has the power to save us or those we love. Only you and your mercy endure, and salvation comes only through you. We pray for love to conquer injustice. In your peace that surpasses all understanding, we pray. Amen.
Belief of the Church
With the whole of Christendom, we share faith in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We believe and confess that God has revealed Himself once and for all in His Son Jesus Christ; that our Lord has redeemed us with whole of mankind by His death and His resurrection; and that there is no salvation apart from Him. We believe that He is present with us in the Word and the Sacrament; that He directs and unites us through His Spirit and thus forms us into a Church. We hear Him summoning us to follow Him, and pray Him to use us in His Service. He joins us together mutually so that knowing ourselves to be members of His Body we become willing to serve each other.
